Extreme CNC Mobile Flip-Top Station

Extreme CNC Mobile Flip-Top Station

Extreme CNC Mobile Flip-Top Station

Ryan from RPG Woodworking and I teamed up on this incredible build. This was by far the most challenging project I have ever worked on. I did most of the sketchup and design work, as well as the video editing. Ryan built the station in his garage and came up with some really ingenious designs for the pipe tunnel, the Gantry Lock, and the Flip-Out Vertical Stops.

The flip top station's frame was modeled after James King's Extreme Assembly table and flip cart. James was gracious enough to let us use his design in the new CNC station. Please visit their channel and check out their amazing work! Also come join use in the conversation at King's Fine Woodworking facebook community.

Let's look over some of the features of the station.

The top is a torsion box that will stay dead flat, which is import for consistent operation of the X-Carve CNC. The top rotates on a steel pipe that is secured by flanges on each inside sides of the cabinets. The pipe rest in a clever pipe tunnel designed by Ryan.

The top rotates 360 degrees and is held in place, vertically, by flip out stops made out of hardwood with a smooth shank screw, allowing it to rotate in place.

The bottom set of cabinets have 6 very large drawers that will hold heavy tools and CNC accessories. The bottom cabinet is secured to each side with heavy duty lag screws.

The Left side cabinet has 4 drawers and a flip out tray. 5 drawers on the other side. The flip out tray allows extra space for a laptop and provides room for cable management. There is a monitor mount of the top the cabinet to faciliate a laptop.

All the cabling for the station is carefully routed through the back of the cabinet so they are out of the way and do not catch on anything when moving it.

When the stop flips upside down or vertical, the gantry is held in place by a pretty sweet gantry locking system designed by Ryan. The locking system is a simple design with 2 sides screwed and glued into a top piece wide enough to snuggly secure the genty. The gentry lock is then secured the base with a dowel pinned into another hardwood piece fastened to the waste board.
